Doctor last to join race

A Sri Lankan-born doctor on a mission to fight litter today became the final candidate to enter the race for London mayor.

Tammy Nagalingam of Blackheath stumped up £20,000 of her own savings to stand, and collected 320 nomination signatures by knocking on doors across London. Her policies include restricting the congestion charge to the morning-rush hour and staging free St George's Day concerts in Hyde Park.

If elected she would spend half her £110,000 salary on teaching the public not to drop litter or harm the environment-Dr Nagalingam was the last of 10 hopefuls to declare her candidacy as nominations closed last night.

Her other policies include scrapping one-way systems in narrow streets, removing unnecessary speed humps and allowing more vehicle waiting in streets lined with shops.

Dr Nagalingam qualified as a doctor in Sri Lanka before coming to Britain and working as an NHS hospital doctor. She now runs private slimming clinics.

The field is led by Ken Livingstone for Labour, with Tory Steve Norris and Lib-Dem Simon Hughes the main challengers. At the Super Thursday elections on 10 June, Londoners will be asked to place five crosses on three ballot papers showing a bewildering-array of candidates-There are 10 slates of candidates standing to be Euro-MPs while 102 individuals are running for the London Assembly. Among the European candidates is George Galloway, the MP expelled by Labour and now running under the banner of the Left-wing Respect coalition.
