Di fountain re-opens, but no running

The controversial memorial fountain to Diana, Princess of Wales reopened to the public today.

The £3.6 million feature has suffered a catalogue of teething problems, culminating in its temporary closure after three visitors slipped in the waters.

Today, just under a month after the 22 July shutdown, the memorial was open again to the public. Theo Moore, spokesman for the Royal Parks, said it would be "business as usual".

Originally, visitors were invited to paddle in the Kathryn Gustafson fountain which pours water into a large granite ring, flowing in two directions to "reflect the turbulence, excitement and energy in Diana's life".

But bosses at the Royal Parks were forced to rethink this because some visitors were running in the water.

The texture of the granite stone has been roughened to improve grip following the accidents.

New guidelines, drawn up with the help of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, mean visitors will be able to paddle and dip their hands while sitting on the sides of the Hyde Park fountain.
