David Cameron rushes to cut MP numbers

Moves to slash the number of MPs at Westminster are to be rushed out by David Cameron, sparking Labour claims of cheating.

The Conservative Party leader wants a new electoral map within five years, resulting in 10 per cent fewer MPs fighting seats with new boundaries.

Current boundaries favour Labour, say Tory analysts, as inner-city seats have more MPs for their populations than the shires.

Former home secretary David Blunkett said: "This plan to shrink the Commons by 10 per cent is not about cutting the cost of politics. It is about advantaging the Conservative Party."
