Cruz doubles as Gina

Penelope Cruz is proving she can recreate the magic of the Fifties cinema with her latest role as the fiery Adeline La Franchise in the re-make of Fanfan La Tulipe.

The costume worn by the 28-year-old Spanish actress is almost identical to the one worn by the star of the original film, Gina Lollobrigida, and transforms Cruz into her mirror image.

in a passionate story set in the time of Louis XV, was credited with making Lollobrigida into a Latin siren to rival Sophia Loren 51 years ago.

In the re-make, produced by French director Luc Besson, Vincent Perez stars opposite Cruz as Fanfan, originally played by Gérard Philipe.

For Cruz the role is one of her most challenging to date. She had to learn to speak French, working intensively with a language coach to polish her accent.

Her on-screen chemistry with Perez has already impressed those critics who were given a preview before the first showing at the Cannes Film Festival.

Perez, considered one of France's most dashing leading men having starred with such actresses as Isabel Adjani and Sophie Marceau, is expected to join Cruz on the Cannes red carpet on the festival's opening night, 14 May. Fanfan la Tulipe is a raucous adventure, comedy and romance in the mould of The Three Musketeers. It tells the story of how a low-born woman captures the heart of a valiant man of action as they unite to outsmart the king's men.

While Besson hopes for great things from this latest remake, cinema fans can feast their eyes on the re-mastered original, which is credited with some of the greatest cinematography and fight scenes ever produced.
