Constitution is behind me, says Pakistan PM in contempt case

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani appeared in court today to defend his record.

He said he should not be charged with contempt for failing to re-open old corruption cases against his boss, President Asif Ali Zardari.

"It is my conviction that he has complete immunity inside and outside the country," Mr Gilani said. "In the constitution, there is complete immunity for the president. There is no doubt about that."

If Mr Gilani is charged with contempt of court for failing to follow court orders, he could be disqualified from office and forced to resign, which would further increase the pressure on the unpopular civilian government and the risk of a military coup.

After the hearing, which was adjourned, Mr Gilani waved to supporters. The court agreed that he would not have to appear again.
