Colin Stagg targeted by thieves as he takes holiday

The man wrongly accused of murdering Rachel Nickell has become a victim of theft after workmen who installed a new garage door allegedly left keys accessible to thieves.

Colin Stagg claims the workmen failed to post the keys to the new door through his letter box as he requested, but left them in the unlocked garage.

He said he returned from holiday to find all his tools had been stolen from the garage on the Alton Estate in Roehampton. He is now considering legal action against the unnamed firm whose men fitted the door.

He said: "I left clear instructions to put the new keys in the self-addressed envelope I provided to stick through my letterbox. Nobody in their right minds would leave a garage unlocked round here."

Ms Nickell, 23, was stabbed on Wimbledon Common in 1992. Mr Stagg was cleared two years later and awarded £706,000 in 2008 for wrongful arrest.
