CIA waits to pinpoint Bin Laden

A team of CIA paramilitaries is reportedly in position outside Kandahar today awaiting the result of negotiations that could lead directly to Osama bin Laden's secret hideout.

Taliban leaders have been talking to tribal chiefs in Kandahar for three days over the surrender of the city, but so far no agreement has been reached. Crucial to these negotiations is a deal under which the Taliban will cooperate with the American team which has been ordered to get Bin Laden out of Afghanistan dead or alive.

Another element of the negotiation concerns Taliban leader Mullah Omar and his coterie of hardline fundamentalists. Omar is demanding an amnesty which so far the tribal chiefs and their American sponsors have refused.

Intelligence sources here believe Kandahar will be given up without a fight. Northern Alliance commanders have been interrogating Taliban prisoners at the request of US military officers working with them and the best intelligence so far points to Bin Laden hiding underground in the Sur Ghar mountains, about 60 miles east of Kandahar near the border town of Maruf.

Three Saudi nationals trapped by Pakistani border scouts crossing from Afghanistan are believed to have been on a covert mission to take Bin Laden large amounts of foreign currency.

FBI agents are presently operating in Pakistan with their counterparts from the ISI, Pakistan's military intelligence. The Americans believe the recent purge of the ISI, ordered by President Pervez Musharraf, has now secured co-operation and recent arrests have, according to inside sources, disclosed useful intelligence.
