Church raid fails to net Karadzic

Nato peacekeepers hunting Bosnian Serb war crimes fugitive Radovan Karadzic, made a night raid on one of his old strongholds today but failed to catch him.

Troops rolled into Pale, a small town in mountains above the capital Sarajevo, and gunfire and explosions were heard as helicopters hovered overhead.

About 40 American, British and German troops sealed off a Serbian Orthodox church and a house where priests live. Two civilians were injured.

Karadzic is wanted by the United Nations war crimes tribunal for the slaughter of Bosnian Muslims in the 1992-95 war.
