Children 'should learn our culture'

Historian David Starkey has triggered a debate on multiculturalism after arguing that British schoolchildren should learn about their "own culture".

The writer was accused of politicising a debate on history teaching in schools by saying children should not learn about world or European history.

Reacting to a comment at a historians' conference in Piccadilly that Britain is "rather diverse", he said: "No, it's not. Most of Britain is a mono-culture. You think London is Britain. It isn't."
