Cheeky vintage with a fruity taste... from Chateau Tooting

It's salmon pink, with a refreshing fruity taste. But this is not a fine rosé wine from France or Italy - it is Chateau Tooting.

Today, as English wine producers announced that production has reached a record four million bottles a year, the cheeky challenger from the capital, is celebrating its fifth and biggest vintage.

Chateau Tooting is made from an assortment of grapes grown in London's back gardens, allotments and even on a few balconies. More than 100 members of the Urban Wine Company collective pool their grapes, which are pressed and bottled by Bookers Vineyard in West Sussex.

Evening Standard was given a preview of the 2010 vintage - launched next week. Technically a "blush" wine, it is delightful, with hints of strawberries and raspberries. Jane Reed, of Tooting, whose vine produces 100 kilograms of grapes, said: "It's great fun to be involved and our French friends are astonished we can produce a wine in grubby old London."
