The defence counsel for both boys, Elizabeth Neal, denied the attacks were anti-Semitic. She said: "Clearly this is a very nasty and unpleasant offence, but it was not racially aggravated. It was a mindless destruction of the of the graves but it was not an anti-Semitic offence. I'm not trying to say that this was a schoolboy prank, but what is clear is that this got out of hand.
