CCTV records shopkeeper's murder

A masked robber who pointed a gun across a counter at a shopkeeper and shot him dead was caught on CCTV.

Raj Pandya, 37, was on the phone to a relative when he was confronted by the man. He asked him: "What do you want?" and picked up a wooden pole to defend himself. The gunman shot once, stepped back, shot the shopkeeper again in the chest before walking out of the Sutton off-licence, putting the 9mm handgun in his coat and leaving his victim dying in a pool of blood.

Mr Pandya's wife Smita and their two young children, who live above the shop, heard the shots and rushed downstairs to the scene. Mrs Pandya is now so traumatised and frightened she is selling up and moving from the area.

The harrowing footage can be seen tonight on Crimewatch UK. Scotland Yard is offering a £10,000 reward to catch the killer, believed to have escaped with nothing from the raid at Anita's Off-Licence, Sutton Common Road, at 9.10pm on 28 November.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Richardson of Serious Crime Group South said: "This was a callous murder. Raj was killed without apparent motive. His wife and children came downstairs to be greeted by a horrific scene. It is very harrowing to see a young girl running around, screaming as her father lays dying on the floor."

The killer wore a dinosaur or monkey-type mask and a black Chicago White Sox coat. One matching the description was found five days later in a skip on the Tulse Hill estate near Brixton. Witnesses told police they saw two men running from the shop.
