Cate: I'd rather be at home

Cate Blanchett took a break from motherhood last night to attend the royal premiere of Charlotte Gray - the film in which she plays the eponymous heroine.

Despite her highly praised performance as the wartime Special Operations Executive agent in the movie of Sebastian Faulks' novel, the 32-year-old actress made it plain last night that she would rather be at home with her new baby than sipping champagne with fellow celebrities and Prince Charles.

Putting in a brief but beaming appearance at the bash she told the Standard: "All I keep thinking about is my little baby boy. Every second of my life my mind is on him. I would rather be with him now than be here."

As she prepared to leave the Prince's Trust party at the Caf? de Paris with screenwriter husband Andrew Upton, she said: "It's incredible how such a little thing has changed our lives so dramatically. The fact we have a child is a revelation in itself.

"It's a real challenge bringing up a baby and at times tougher than acting. But he's a good baby really. He doesn't wake up in the middle of the night. We've been blessed. Our son has changed my life in every conceivable way. He has opened it up rather than closed it down. I find myself thinking of him all the time and I want to be with him constantly. Andrew and I both do."

The Australian actress, best known for her role in Elizabeth, discovered she was pregnant while preparing for the leading role in Charlotte Gray.

At the time she said: "We've been married for four years and the hardest thing will be to share Andrew with another human being." She gave birth at the St John and St Elizabeth hospital, St John's Wood, in mid-December, and chose to miss the premiere of The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, in which she plays elf queen Galadriel.

In her new movie - which premiered at the Odeon, Leicester Square - she plays a Scots heroine parachuted into Vichy France to assist the Resistance and to try to find her pilot lover, who has been reported missing.
