Capital voted our dirtiest city

London has been voted the dirtiest city in Britain, offering visitors little more than rip-off prices and bad transport, a poll revealed today.

Despite offering a huge array of restaurants, clubs and theatres, the capital came only third in a poll of the nation's favourite cities behind Edinburgh and Bath.

The survey by Conde Nast Traveller magazine ranked Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh as top of the culture league while Bath's Roman spa and Georgian terrace housing won it the title of most aesthetic city.

Although it failed to win over many of the 35,000 readers polled, London scored highly for offering the best range of accommodation and the UK's top five hotels - The Four Seasons, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, the Berkeley, the Savoy, One Aldwych and the Great Eastern. It also scored well for its architecture, culture and nightlife.

Conde Nast Traveller editor Sarah Miller said: "Where London falls down is that it is the least user friendly. It needs its transport sorted out and that is down to the Mayor."
