Calm after the Downing Street storm

As the world's attention was focused on that shiny black door this morning, the mood in Downing Street – after the momentous events of the last two days – was strangely quiet.

Inside, David Cameron was at work putting together his new Government and, presumably introducing himself to the massed Downing Street secretaries – "or garden girls" as they are known.

The mood among the media watchers was as much shivery as expectant actually since they were on the shadowy side of the street. That door, however, was bathed in the morning sunlight, which gave added lustre to its shine as the key figures, such as William Hague the new Foreign Secretary and Therasa May, arrived, smiling and waving to the cameras.

Today was not about Gordon Brown coming out, it was about the new Government going in – as somewhere in the background, the last removal men packed away the New Labour years.

Suddenly the relative quiet was broken by shrieks from the Downing Street gates as Nick Clegg arrived for his momentous meeting with Cameron.

A crowd all wearing yellow baseball caps to match the tie of the new deputy prime minister, itself clearly co-ordinated with the colour of the policy folders being used by civil servants to prepare for this moment, just in case they failed to recognise him.

"Yah, yah" , the yellow-hatted crowd shouted as his black Government limousine – words to cheer the heart of even the most ardent sandal wearing Lib Demmmer from the muesli belt – entered the home of Government. "Look it's him", they cried in unison.

Further investigation revealed they were a party of schoolchildren, proudly wearing their school colours. And their cheers were for the BBC's Nick Robinson, making his own triumphant entrance to Downing Street, where he would presumably be using the words "it's a truly extraordinary day Hugh" in every other sentence for the next 15 or 20 hours.

As Clegg stepped out of his car and made the long walk up Downing Street Cameron himself opened the door, smiling the smile of the man who finally got the keys to the new house, even if it is perhaps only a kind of glorified flatshare.

What followed was a good deal of hand shaking and back slapping for the cameras, which will obviously make great material for when the whole thing goes belly up in a few months, before the two men went inside to, we were being earnestly told "get on with the serious business of Government."
