Calls to start safety work at junction where cyclist died

Campaigners today demanded an immediate start to delayed safety work on a junction where a cyclist was killed last week.

Work to transform the area outside King's Cross St Pancras Station with special safety measures for cyclists were due to begin a month ago.

But despite repeated calls from London Assembly members and cycling activists to accommodate the number of bicycles, no work has been done.

Min Joo Lee, a student at nearby Central St Martin's, was crushed by a heavy goods vehicle last Monday at the crossing where campaigners have previously urged Transport for London to introduce green cycle lanes.

Jenny Jones, a London Assembly member and member of the transport committee, has written to Mayor Boris Johnson urging him to reassess the road layout.

She said: "Anyone cycling in the King's Cross area is only too aware of the appalling road layout which encourages constant lane-changing by buses, large lorries and cars and leaves no 'right place' for a cyclist to be."

Charlie Lloyd, campaigns officer for the London Cycling Campaign, said: "It is a classic example of when a station is redeveloped, but the horrific surrounding road layout is not addressed."

Dean of the School of Fashion at the university said the 24-year-old Korean was "a talented designer with a promising future in the fashion industry", adding: "She will be missed by everyone at CSM who knew her." In the past five years, three female cyclists have died in collisions with HGVs.
