Calls pour in over new Milly clue

Detectives investigating the Milly Dowler murder are following up 170 calls from the public after a plea for help tracing a red car thought to be linked to her abduction.

Detective Inspector Kevin McEntee said help was "pouring in", including some from the motor trade. He said the calls threw up "several" new lines of investigation.

One caller reported sighting a red vehicle near where Milly's body was found. This came nearly a week after it emerged detectives investigating the 13-year-old's 2002 murder are now liaising closely with Scotland Yard investigators, hunting a suspected serial killer responsible for the murders of Amelie Delagrange and Marsha McDonnell.

Five attempted murders are also being linked to the inquiry, including an incident in May last year when 18-year-old convent schoolgirl Kate Sheedy was deliberately run down by a van as she walked home.

Today detectives from the Milly inquiry positioned a red Daewoo Nexia close to the spot near Walton-on-Thames railway station, where the schoolgirl was last seen alive exactly three years ago today.
