Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare - preview

It's not a surprise that the latest Call of Duty title is generating massive amounts of hype, what is a surprise is that some of this hype has come from somebody getting early access to the game and then streaming it live over Twitch.

A user going by the name of Anfuny29 got hold a copy of the game ahead of the November 4 release date (November 3 for pre-orders/Day Zero edition) and broadcast it over the popular streaming website.

The stream and channel were shut down pretty swiftly, but not before certain details and new gameplay features were observed - including a 30-kill "DNA Bomb" scorestreak, where if you get 30 kills in a single life you get to activate a bomb that kills the enemy team and leaves behind a "green mist", only to dissipate after covering the entire map. No obvious effects were seen from the mist, but it's likely to have some sort of impact on opposing players due to the difficulty in achieving so many kills without dying. Also seen in the leak were weapon camouflage and optional paintball effects for your ammunition.

But what can we expect from the game, what features and details are already available? Well, it's set to be the biggest title in the prestigious series so far, not only due to the availability of extra power from the optimised last gen consoles, but with the additional capabilities of the PS4, Xbox One and natural progression in PC's powered by the latest ahead-of-the-curve hardware, you can expect some significant improvements from the last titles in the series.

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey heads up the storyline as Jonathan Irons, one of the most powerful men in the world, sat in the centre of a web of private military corporations who have become the dominant armed forces for numerous nations around the world. Set in a "plausible future", it opens up doors to many different opportunities to create and utilise future military tech. First of which is the incorporation of powerful ExoSkeletons which improve every aspect of a soldier's battle readiness, enhancing player movement through boost jumps and grappling, covert cloaking and biomechanics that enhance and display an impressive amount of battlefield power projection, all of which make for brilliant opportunities for gameplay awesomeness.

Exo Skeleton gets you up close and personal with your foes but you still need interesting methods and a huge arsenal of firepower and skills in order to take them out. Hi-tech abilities, equipment, perks and vehicles are just the beginning. Players can select between different types of ammunition - standard and directed-energy - and pairing these with all the other customisation options looks set to bring a tremendous lightshow to every firefight.

Multiplayer customisation looks set to add some interesting character development with its Pick-13 system. Built on the fan favourite Pick-10, the create-a-class gives players more options than ever with their own loadouts for differing styles of play. Beyond typical weapons, perks and attachments, the create-a-class now includes the ability to pick your scorestreaks and gives you 3 extra slots to fill.

Scorestreaks are back and follow the setting of the game. With the influx of new military technology, scorestreaks are not being left behind. They can be customised by adding power or performance attributes which increase score requirements and can be worked on cooperatively once earned and opened, so teammates can jump in and join the streak to make them even more powerful.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is released on November 4 across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Pre-order now to get in on the action on November 3 with the Day Zero version.
