Caine's witty winner

It is a line which has been repeated by film fans - and Michael Caine impersonators - for more than 30 years.

When the preparations for a gold bullion raid go explosively wrong with the destruction of a van, Caine's character turns to a fellow crook and says: 'You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!'

Now the actor's immortal sentence from 1969 British crime caper The Italian Job has been voted the best film one- liner of all time by cinemagoers.

Second place went to Clark Gable's classic put- down to Vivien Leigh in 1939's Gone With The Wind, when Rhett Butler tells Scarlett O'Hara: 'Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.'

The poll of 1,300 moviegoers, conducted by communications firm Orange, was carried out over four weeks to mark a series of talks at the British Library. But

the results are likely to leave fans of the golden age of cinema disappointed.

The only film made before the 1950s to appear in top ten is Gone With The Wind.

There is no mention for either The Wizard Of Oz or Casablanca, which in 'Play it, Sam' produced one of the most famously misquoted lines in cinema.

Instead, it seems the nation's favourites are a mix of gangster movies, action films and comedies,
ranging from Goodfellas to Carry On Cleo.

The worst one-liner of all time, according to the poll, was Andie MacDowell's 'Is it raining? I hadn't noticed' as she stands in a downpour with Hugh Grant in Four Weddings And A Funeral. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'I'll be back' from sci-fi film The Terminator, and Tom Hanks's 'Life is like a box of chocolates' in Forrest Gump, were also on the list of clangers.
