Bush calls for new unity with Europe

George Bush today called on European leaders to replace differences over Iraq with a new era of "transatlantic unity".

Speaking at the start of a five-day visit to Europe, the US President said the alliance between the United States and Europe was essential for global peace and security.

He arrived in Brussels last night for his first overseas tour since being re-elected President. In a speech this morning he made clear his determination to draw a line under disagreements over the invasion of Iraq two years ago.

"America supports a strong Europe because we need a strong partner in the hard work of advancing freedom in the world," he said. "The alliance of Europe and North America is the main pillar of our security in a new century.

"Our strong friendship is essential to peace and prosperity across the globe.

"No temporary debate, no passing disagreement of governments, no power on earth will ever divide us," he said.

Mr Bush will underline his message-of reconciliation with a round of meetings with Nato and European leaders.

His two-day stop in Belgium will be followed by a whistle-stop tour of Germany and Slovakia.

The key conversations will be with France's President Chirac and Germany's Gerhard Schroeder who led the European opposition to Iraq.

In his speech Mr Bush called for international support for Iraq.

He said a free and democratic Iraq would be a "beacon of freedom" and a "source of true stability" in the Middle East.

He went on: "Today, America and Europe face a moment of consequence and opportunity.

"Together we can once again set history on a hopeful course - away from poverty and despair, and toward development and the dignity of self-rule ... away from resentment and violence, and toward justice and the peaceful settlement of differences," he said.

Despite the President's determination to restore relations with Europe, differences remain over trade, Iran and EU plans to lift the arms embargo on China.

The White House has expressed doubts over the EU's " softlysoftly" approach to Tehran.

Mr Bush said he was not planning to join France, Germany and Britain in seeking to negotiate a deal with Iran to end its nuclear programme.

The President also rejected a call by Chancellor Schroeder for Nato to be overhauled.

"Nato is vital and we'll work to keep in strong," Mr Bush said.
