Burma pledges to free prisoners

Burma's military government has promised to free political prisoners and allow elections next year to avoid UN action.

Ambassador Than Swe agreed to Security Council requests, but did not say if amnesty would extend to jailed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

"No Security Council action is warranted," he said.
