Britain's top terror suspects

As new figures show that 144 suspected international terrorists have been arrested in Britain, but no convictions have been made, we look at five people investigated by the police.

Name: Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Masri, 44, Egyptian-born.
Suspected of: Recruiting and training al Qaeda terrorists.
What happened: Since 11 September Abu Hamza, a radical imam based at the Finsbury Park Mosque who has a UK passport, has been under increased police surveillance but has not been arrested. The only time he has been detained was in 1999, when he was questioned by Scotland Yard detectives on suspicion of terrorism offences. He was held for several days before being released without charge. The Yemeni authorities had requested his arrest and extradition, claiming he was linked to plots to bomb targets there.
Where is he now? Abu Hamza has denied the accusations made against him and continues to preach at his mosque.

Name: Lotfi Raissi, 28, Algerian-born.
Suspected of: Helping to train the 11 September hijackers to fly.
What happened: A British magistrate said there was "no evidence" Mr Raissi had been involved in terrorism and turned down an American application to extradite him in May. Raissi had spent five months on remand in maximum-security Belmarsh Jail in south-east London. The American case against him was entirely based on his failure to mention a previous conviction for theft and the fact that he had undergone knee surgery in the three years prior to his application for a medical certificate to accompany his pilot's licence in Arizona last June.
Where is he now? Raissi is back with his family in west London and is thought to be suing for wrongful imprisonment.

Name: Abu Qatada, 42, Palestinian-born.
Suspected of: Being a spiritual leader of the al Qaeda network and wanted for questioning by anti-terror police throughout Europe.
What happened: Qatada disappeared in January and is suspected of turning supergrass for M15. A convicted terrorist facing a life sentence in Jordan, Qatada was on the list of al Qaeda suspects issued by the US after 11 September. He is one of 38 individuals and organisations to have their assets frozen as the result of orders issued by the British and US governments in the wake of the 11 September attacks, which Qatada said were not a "bad act".
Where is he now? He is said to be living in the north of England with his wife and four children under the "protection" of British intelligence.

Name: Yasser al-Siri, 39, Egyptianborn.
Suspected of: Giving money to al Qaeda via his London bookselling business and helping organise the assassination of an anti-Taliban leader.
What happened: He was cleared at the Old Bailey in May of conspiring to murder the Northern Alliance leader, General Ahmad Shah Masood. He was re-arrested immediately because US authorities wanted to extradite him. But Home Secretary David Blunkett this week decided that there was not enough evidence to justify his extradition. The warrant against Siri, who has lived in Britain for eight years, alleged that he gave money to al Qaeda, knowing that it would be used for terrorism. But Mr Blunkett ruled he had no case to answer and he walked free.
Where is he now? He is thought to be back at home in Maida Vale after seven months in prison on remand.

Name: Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed, 43, Syrian-born.
Suspected of: Recruiting Islamic extremists and having links with terrorists associated with al Qaeda.
What happened: He is the leader of Al-Muhajiroun, an Islamic extremist organisation which claims to have recruited hundreds of people for "holy wars" in Chechnya, Bosnia and Afghanistan. Bakri Mohammed was monitored by police after expressing support for Osama bin Laden in the aftermath of 11 September. He also issued a fatwa against Pakistan's president General Pervez Musharraf over his support for the US. Bakri Mohammed is banned from all British university campuses because of fears he could indoctrinate students. He has also been investigated over militant statements which included a call for Britain to become an Islamic state.
Where he is now? He is based in Tottenham and has also been under police investigation for allegedly inciting racial hatred.
