Bolt's force throws three teenage cousins into air

Two girls struck by lightning have told doctors they were thrown into the air by the force of the bolt.

Another girl is still in intensive care after the strike in Hyde Park last night.

The 15-year-olds, all cousins and from London, were caught in the open at Speakers' Corner during a family day out. All three were thrown into the air.

One was so badly struck that she stopped breathing and is in intensive care at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, with spinal injuries.

The other two, described as "comfortable", are being treated at University College Hospital in London, also for spinal injuries, but are expected to make a quick recovery. A fourth girl, thought to be a friend, was also taken to hospital suffering from shock.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said paramedics risked their lives to treat the girls. "The storm was still overhead and lightning still coming down while they were treating the patients," he said.

"All the staff involved acted very professionally in providing fast treatment to these patients in very difficult circumstances." Scotland Yard said the incident is being investigated by officers from the Royal Parks' Operational Command Unit.

A 14-year-old boy was killed when he was struck by lightning as he camped in a friend's garden. Joseph Wharton, of Bloxwich, West Midlands, was hit during a thunderstorm yesterday morning.

A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said about five people died each year as a result of lightning strikes in Britain.
