Boiling water attack on Carr

Prison inmates today vowed to kill Ian Huntley if they got the chance.

The threats were revealed as it was claimed that a prisoner tried to throw boiling water into Maxine Carr's face.

Carr, 26, is understood to want to press charges over the incident at Holloway women's prison earlier this week.

Inmate Sarah Marshall, 32, said she witnessed the attempted scalding, adding: "Maxine started it. Her attitude antagonised everybody. There's no remorse on that girl's face."

Meanwhile, Huntley was described as "the most despised man" to enter the maximum security Belmarsh jail in Woolwich.

He spent the first night of his life sentence in a specially-converted cell in the jail's medical wing. Officers monitored him throughout the night because of fears he might try to commit suicide after being convicted of murdering Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

Prison sources said he is likely to have to spend at least 10 years in total segregation for his own protection.

One officer described how prisoners felt "utter revulsion" for Huntley and added that he had "a price on his head". A warder said: "Inmates will certainly attack him if they have the chance."

When Huntley returned to Belmarsh he was ordered to strip. Officers wearing plastic gloves searched him.

He was told to take a shower, then handed his prison clothes of shirt, denim jeans, underwear and boots. Handcuffed again, he was photographed, told his prison number and his category: A - exceptionally high risk. Huntley is one of only about 20 men in England in that category, the one deemed most at risk from attack.

Prisons expert Mark Leech said: "He is going to be the modern Ian Brady. Other prisoners will be waiting to assault him."

At Holloway, a warder said of Carr: "She has become a hate figure because there were children involved. There are those who would hurt her if they could get to her."

The mood in Carr's home town of Grimsby was equally hostile. Residents on the Comber Place estate where Carr grew up have vowed to attack her.

Student Kane Camps, 18, said: "She will not last five minutes in Grimsby. People here are already planning what to do if she returns. She is evil and she is a liar. She will be beaten and stoned and I personally will join in."

David Stone, 29, who attended Healing comprehensive with Carr in 1989, said: "She lied and that makes her just as bad as him."

Carr, sentenced to three and a half years for conspiracy to pervert justice, could be eligible for release next May because of the time she has spent on remand. The Rector of Grimsby has advised Carr to seek a new identity and not to go back once she is freed. Canon Michael Hunter, 62, said: "She lied for Huntley. No one will ever know whether she knew if that monster had killed them. It will be impossible for her to be rehabilitated here."

Carr is said to have been inconsolable as she contemplated her future outside prison. She has told her mother that her life has been ruined by "that man".

Family friend Doris Hewis, 66, who lives a few doors away from Carr's mother, Shirley Capp, in Grimsby said: "Shirley says Maxine has been crying on the telephone to her saying she hates that man. She can't bring herself to say his name and feels sick at the thought she once loved and wanted to marry him."

Factory worker Ms Capp, 60, added: "We're not criminals. We have never been in trouble with the law in our lives. Maxine has been dragged into this. What sort of life will she now lead?"

Mark Thomas, from Cleethorpes, who was pictured kissing Carr in Grimsby during the weekend the girls were murdered, says he did it for a bet during a night out.

Mr Thomas said: "My friends and I had a £20 bet on who would get off with the ugliest girl. We were having our pictures taken when she came running over and posed for one of them." He said she asked him back to her house but he gave her the slip in a nightclub.
