Bogus claims of eBay 'tsunami auctions'

Internet auction website eBay is today accused of carrying bogus fundraising appeals that exploit the Asian tsunami disaster.

Hundreds of items, including tickets for the Millennium Stadium disaster relief concert and coloured wristbands are on sale alongside claims that proceeds go to charities.

But the Red Cross and Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) today said they feared many of the auctions are scams. In the weeks following the disaster, eBay saw a number of auction sites appear with hundreds of

lots on offer. Tickets for Saturday's charity concert are the top attraction with one selling for ?77.

Wristbands are fetching up to ?10 while hats, videos, fridges and board games also appear next to claims their sale will help victims.

A Red Cross spokesman said: "People are concocting scams to prey on the caring nature of others. Giving money direct to a charity is the only way to be sure it gets there."

Bosses at eBay today admitted they had no way of checking where the proceeds went. A spokeswoman said there were no plans to ban the auctions, although several have been removed from the site.

She added that eBay had a charity section where sellers are vetted, and advised customers to use common sense when buying elsewhere.

"For those bidding on a charity auction which is not on the charity pages, I would just urge them to use their common sense and even contact the seller to make sure they are happy that the proceeds are going to the charity in question," said the spokeswoman.

The company has been criticised for auctioning the yellow wristband sold by Tour de France legend Lance Armstrong to raise funds for his cancer foundation.
