Bobby Moore's shirt up for sale

It is every fan's dream to wear the shirt that Pele or Bobby Moore wore. Now that dream could come true when mementoes of the great footballers go up for auction in London.

The only trouble is that you may need the equivalent of a small transfer fee to buy one.

In March, when Christie's sold a Pele shirt that he wore in his country's 1970 World Cup final triumph, it fetched £157,000 - smashing the previous record of £91,750 paid for Sir Geoff Hurst's 1966 World Cup winning shirt.

Of several Pele shirts that will go under the hammer at Christie's in two weeks' time, probably the most sought after will be one which is also from the 1966 World Cup.

Worn by the Brazilian genius during a match against Portugal, it has an estimated price of between £3,000 and £7,000, but it could fetch tens of thousands of pounds.

There are a growing number of private collectors who are willing to pay a fortune for anything once owned by their idols.

TV celebrity chef Jamie Oliver paid £29,000 for a pair of David Beckham's adidas boots at a charity auction hosted by the England captain before the World Cup.

And England fans will be keen to snap up one piece of history at the Christie's sale, the last shirt pulled on by the late Bobby Moore when he played for Fulham against Blackburn Rovers in May 1977.

The red and black striped No6 shirt, which is estimated to fetch between £3,000 and £5,000, was worn in his 1,000th senior game and 804th league appearance. It was given to then Fulham manager Bobby Campbell after the game.

A shirt that Moore wore in 1966 during an international game against Scotland at Hampden Park is also included in the sale at between £1,000 and £1,500. A traditional white England No8 shirt worn by Jimmy Greaves in a match against Mexico or France on the way to his country winning the 1966 World Cup is expected to fetch between £1,500 and £2,000.

The shirt Greaves is believed to have worn in the 0-0 draw against Uruguay during the event has a similar price tag.

In total, more than 300 lots are up for grabs, ranging from caps, to medals, cups and programmes. The most poignant item on sale, however, must be Italy's equivalent of the FA Cup, the Coppa Italia, which was awarded to Torino FC for winning the competition for a second time in 1943.

The team, probably the best in Europe, went on to win the Italian League in 1943, 1946, 1947 and 1948. Then, in 1949, they were returning from a Latin Cup match against Benfica in Portugal, when their plane crashed, killing 28 passengers and crew.

The dead included star players Valentino Mazzola and Ezio Loik and manager Leslie Livesely, a Briton. For the rest of the season their opponents fielded their youth teams against them and they won the league again. The 1943 cup is valued at between £35,000 and £45,000.
