Driven to protect themselves, the inmates then reverted to an alternative zoo strategy - they made nests for themselves and snuggled down to doze and slumber the hours away. Zoo animals sleep far more than usual for their species, and the inmates followed suit. Some of them failed to achieve this. Instead of over-sleeping, they suffered from insomnia and started to snap. They snarled and screeched at one another in a way they would never do in the outside world. Also, their bodily functions rebelled and they became constipated, like Alex, the skinny male model, or they went off their food, or they started to overeat wildly, like buxom Alison. There was one old zoo bear that I recall, who ate so much out of boredom that one busy day, when the public threw him hundreds of buns, he died of suffocation from the huge pressure of ingested food against his lungs.
