Bid's trump card

Key details of London's bid for the 2012 Olympics can be revealed today.

A document will be delivered to the International Olympic Committee on Monday setting out the capital's plans.

Bid leaders believe the £3.6billion proposals are strong enough to beat Paris.

The 300-page document remains topsecret and will not be made public until next Friday by bid chairman Lord Coe, Mayor Ken Livingstone and Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell. But the Evening Standard understands that the team is confident it has turned areas of concern - in particular over transport - into key strengths. The jewel in the crown is a "bullet" train that will speed spectators from central London to the proposed Olympic village in seven minutes. Leaders are also able to point to 10 rail and Tube lines that will run to the Olympic village by 2012.

As the document spells out: "London 2012 will be the best-connected Games ever - one train every 15 seconds."

Much will also be made of the "legacy" the Olympics would leave and how it would transform one of the most deprived areas of London. Six new venues will remain afterwards - a downsized Olympic stadium for athletics, an aquatics centre, cycling velodrome, BMX track, all-weather hockey pitches and an indoor basketball and volleyball arena. By comparison, Paris will rely on the Stade de France, which will be 14 years old in 2012.
