Bid to recruit more women lawyers, says City boss

Leading London law firms are on the hunt for more women lawyers, according to the head of one of the largest companies.

Simon Davies, managing partner of Linklaters, says the industry is under growing client pressure to promote diversity and is seeking to employ more women.

He said big firms could also benefit from giving jobs to people from ethnic minorities and other minority groups.

His remarks come as leading firms are setting up initiatives to attract those who have felt unwelcome from the historically white, male-dominated profession.

Diversity statistics show women account for 50 per cent of law trainees but less than 20 per cent of females make partners.

Laura King, global people partner at law firm Clifford Chance, said clients demanded a creative approach to problem solving, requiring advisers who can draw on a variety of life experiences. Her firm has founded a group to address concerns of women, gay and lesbian or ethnic minority workers and emphasise inclusiveness.

Critics have warned that this kind of employment drive can further stigmatise groups or antagonise colleagues who feel that special treatment is being given.

But King says: "Ultimately we find it better for business."
