Beckham set to sign for M&S

Marks & Spencer is poised to pull off the transfer sensation of the season by signing David Beckham.

The England captain is close to finalising a deal with the High Street chain. The company is desperate to capture a high-profile star to front an advertising campaign to try to improve its dowdy image.

Both sides today confirmed that talks are expected to be concluded shortly. Although neither would talk money, the deal will dwarf the one Beckham has with Brylcreem, which earns him £1million a year.

It is thought that the M&S collaboration will involve him endorsing its World Cup 2002 merchandise.

Beckham, 26, also promotes Police sunglasses, Adidas sportswear and Rage Software.
