BAT chief collects £2.2m

MARTIN Broughton, the chairman of British American Tobacco who advised his children not to smoke, received remuneration package worth more than £2.2m last year, it emerged.

Broughton was paid a salary and bonuses of £1.5m while cashing in share options triggering a profit of a further £769,504. He was paid a £1.4m salary and bonus the previous year.

His remuneration was agreed by cigar-chomping non-executive deputy chairman and head of the remuneration committee, the former Conservative Chancellor Kenneth Clarke, who received a near-19% rise in his basic pay to £118,750. He was paid a further £25,000 as non-executive chairman at Formula 1 team British American Racing.

Meanwhile, Ulrich Herter, who retired as managing director on New Year's Eve last year, was paid a salary and bonus of £1.13m against £1.1m a year earlier. In total, the 13 directors shared £4.8m against £4.3m last year.
