Barbara: Basque was producer's idea

Barbara Windsor today stood by her decision to appear in a Moulin Rouge-style revealing outfit at the Royal Variety Performance, where Cilla Black also wore a tight black basque and fishnets.

Windsor's agent Barry Burnett said: "They were the hit of the show last night. It was the producer's idea - Jeff Thacker."

Asked if she had needed much persuading to do it, Mr Burnett said: "No, because she loves that side of the business. She loves getting out there and performing on stage and giving her all. It's one of her favourite shows as well.

"She didn't need a lot of persuading. I think Lily Savage [Paul O'Grady] phoned her up and said, 'Come on, you've got to do it'."

Black, 58, had the audience in stitches when she bent over to reveal a flashing red heart made of fairy lights. However, actress Judy Cornwell, 59, said: "Marlene Dietrich used to show a leg but I think showing everything once you are approaching your sixties is dicey."

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood groaned when Black did her stunt last night: "Gawd - I've seen it all now."

Asked if Windsor had been striking a blow for more mature performers, Mr Burnett said: "In a way, yes. It's great that ladies in their late fifties, early sixties can get out there and do it, bring the house down."
