Assembly urges TfL to press on with Cross River Tram

LONDON Assembly members called today for Transport for London to continue with plans for a Cross River Tram.

The Assembly transport committee published a report detailing expert views on the proposals, which would connect north and south London via Waterloo Bridge.

The report recommends all possible funding options for the CRT are examined and a detailed analysis of alternatives is published.

The CRT is one of several transport plans that have been put on hold by Boris Johnson in an effort to cut spending. Its proposed route would run from Euston to Waterloo, with branches to Camden Town and King's Cross in the north, and Brixton and Peckham in the south.

Labour member and transport committee chairwoman Val Shawcross said: "Most committee members agree that the Cross River Tram would address the gaps in services and lack of capacity that plagues transport links, particularly in south London.

"Transport for London must explore all possible options for funding or ... much-needed regeneration schemes along the route may not go ahead."

Members of the Conservative Group said they did not support further spending on the scheme.
