Arms firm man on spy charges

A worker at Britain's biggest arms manufacturer appeared in court today charged with spying for the Russians.

Ian Parr, 45, a test coordinator at BAE Systems in Basildon, faces nine counts under the Official Secrets Act and a 10th under the Theft Act.

It is claimed Parr tried to sell the documents to a member of staff at the Russian embassy for £25,000.

Parr, who is married and lives in Rochford, Essex, was remanded in custody at Bow Street Magistrates Court until 3 April, when he will appear at the Old Bailey.

The case will heighten security fears within Britain's defence industry.
