Arise Sir Digby, champion of UK business

DIGBY Jones, boss of the CBI, has been knighted by the Queen in her New Year's Honours List. John Vickers, head of the Office of Fair Trading, Alan Jeffrey, the UK chairman of Toyota, and Mervyn Pedelty, the former chief executive of Co-operative Financial Services, will also receive knighthoods.

Jones receives his honour in recognition of his work on behalf of British business at home and abroad. Under his leadership the CBI has opened new offices in Washington and China as well as expanding its Brussels base. Members recently asked him to extend his five-year tenure by a further two years.

'I like to think the voice of business has become more understood under my leadership, but this has been a team effort and I am delighted for everyone at the CBI,' said Jones.

Vickers has overseen a radical overhaul of the OFT and has helped the watchdog to bare its teeth. His most memorable victory came in the price-fixing row with retailers and manufacturers over replica football kits, where he imposed record fines.

Some of Britain's best-known shopkeepers also feature in the honours list. John Clare, head of the Dixons electrical chain gets a CBE. The honour may help to take his mind off the latest sales figures which are arriving at his company's HQ in Hemel Hempstead, Herts.

Asda's chief executive Tony Denunzio also receives a CBE. Denunzio, 43, has been at the Asda helm since 2001. He ramped up aggressive price slashing that helped the Leeds-based giant overtake Sainsbury to become the nation's second-largest grocer.

Richard Bowker has received some compensation after his job as the head of the Strategic Rail Authority was axed earlier this year. The guitar-strumming friend of Prime Minister Tony Blair also gets a CBE.
