The Mayor has denied the claims, saying: "Serious questions must be asked about whether Mike Tuffrey is in favour of cleaning up this international landmark or whether he wants it to go back to being a pigeon toilet. He must make up his mind.
"The success of the programme means that its costs are now declining sharply. The cost of the hawk has actually fallen from £105,000 last year to just £25,000 this year, as Mike Tuffrey knows perfectly well but chooses not to highlight. Indeed, the hawk has become a tourist attraction in its own right.
