American writer killed by drink driver

An American doctor and author visiting London was killed by a suspected drink driver while crossing the road, police said today.

The man, in his fifties, who has not been named, was run down by a silver Peugeot 306 in Totteridge late last night. The driver - a man also in his fifties - was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving over the limit.

He was taken to a north London police station where he remains in custody. An autopsy is expected to be held.
