Staying stylish this year means binning the Botox and getting a guinea pig

The shop

Start, in Hoxton, only opened in October but has already made its mark. It sells lots of cool labels, including Maharishi, Helmut Lang and Comme des Garcons, but also scours the world for unknown brands and young designers. Check out the girls' grotto and rub shoulders with creative types (the co-owner is Brix Smith, formerly of The Fall).

The fitness regime

Rafael Nieto is the martial arts guru whose north London studio attracts the Primrose Hill crowd. Jonny Lee Miller and Sadie Frost both go here for Zen-Do, a customised martial art combining stretching with kung fu kicks, judo throws and jujitsu holds. Martial arts may have been around for ages but have been overshadowed recently by everything from Pilates to power yoga. Add the allure of Angelina Jolie in the Tomb Raider sequel and kickboxing is sure to enjoy a comeback.

The book

Sophie Dahl's first novel, The Man With the Dancing Eyes (Bloomsbury, £9.99), is sure to be the book every fashionista will be reading (well, it is going to be serialised in Vogue, and there are lots of pictures). It's a modern-day fairy tale set in New York. Being a hopeless romantic is the new playing-it-cool.

The bar

Lonsdale House is a place Notting Hillbillies can call home. Cocktail whizz Dick Bradsell is the man behind the drinks, the futuristic interior is designed by the hip architects Fusion, and the food is just scrummy. It doesn't open officially until the end of the month, but Jade Jagger, Plum Sykes and Phoebe Philo have already been seen propping up the bar.

The pet

It's small, furry and fashionable - not the trim on your parka, but a guinea pig. Designer Julie Verhoeven is one of the hipsters who have fallen for them. To adopt a piggy call Cupid Cavies on 020 7916 1852.

The beauty treatment

The news for 2003 is the opening of lots of glamorous new spas. At Spa Illuminate (63 South Audley Street, W1, 020 7499 7777) you can have an Inner Calm four-hand massage, where two therapists ease away your stresses and strains, then stock up on Nars make-up. The Hurlingham Clinic in Fulham (020 7348 6380) is London's first medical day-spa where you can have up-to-the-minute treatments, including glycolic peels. Time-saving is the big thing this year - Charles Worthington offers a Permanent Paint Job that seals colour on to nails using UV light (020 7631 1370).

The look

The coolest trend for 2003 is space-age futurism with a Sixties twist. Paco Rabanne, who has been designing space-age frocks for decades, has influenced many designers, from Hussein Chalayan to Prada (left). We love Prada's metallic shoes (above) and its new handbag (020 7647 5000). Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham are on the waiting list.

The treats

You'll have to stop worrying about your waistline if you want to keep up with the teaparty trend. Yummy chocolate, cakes and pastries are this year's coolest treats. Go to Maison Blanc on the Fulham Road, where Gwyneth stocks up on chocolate goodies, or Konditor & Cook in Borough Market, where you can bump into Jamie Oliver. Even Giorgio Armani is producing chocolate, the trendy but pricey restaurant Sketch has a tea parlour, or you can do a Liz Hurley and pop into Claridge's for tea and cake.

The holiday

Fashionable folk will be flocking to the Balkans this summer. Slovenia and Serbia boast fabulous lakes and mountains, while Croatia has the beautiful Istra region, where Sharon Stone was recently spotted house hunting. For some contemporary cool, sample the luxury Hotel Dubrovnik Palace, which opens in June.

The interior

Minimalism is dead. Go for bold prints from Marimekko, or Piero Lissoni's Pucci print-covered chairs. Or you can do it on a budget with duvet sets from Habitat (Sophie Ellis Bextor recently bought some).
