All change for Crossrail at Paddington

This is the first image of the new Crossrail station at Paddington.

It shows a metal and glass entrance on the site of the existing Hammersmith and City line station - which is to be demolished - and a landscaped public square next to Regent's Canal.

Solar panels attached to the glazed building will help power the lighting, and a green roof will give a habitat for birds and insects. Paddington is one of the most complex Crossrail stations, because of the interchange's sprawling layout and the number of mainline and Tube services that will use it.

The new entrance is vital as the Hammersmith and City line station is already "heavily congested". With Circle line trains starting to run on the track as well from next week, the number of passengers using it is expected to rise by 260 per cent. The Crossrail platforms will be built beneath Eastbourne Terrace.
