'Alco-lock' trial offer to banned drivers

Convicted drink-drivers could escape part of their ban by fitting dashboard breathalysers to their cars.

The device is linked to the ignition and detects alcohol on the breath, preventing the vehicle from starting if the driver has had just one drink.

The Government today launched a recruitment drive for motorists who want to join an 18-month trial. If it is a success, new legislation could allow courts to use alcohol locks in rehabilitation schemes for drink-drive offenders.

Transport minister David Jamieson said: "Drivers who have been banned in the past could have the device fitted to stop them driving even after half a pint or a small glass of wine. Alcohol lock programmes in other countries have worked well with repeat drink-drivers. I'd like to see it legislated for as soon as possible."

Under the plans, a computer the size of a car radio would be attached to a mouthpiece which the driver must blow into it before the engine starts. The computer records the breathtests for analysis. Motorists would bear the cost of up to about ?1,000.

Ministers hope to include the locks in a Road Safety Bill, with the first being fitted early next year.
