Advance for pacemakers

Pacemakers could in future run on body heat, it was claimed today.

New York firm Biophan Technologies is developing a "biothermal battery" that uses the warmth of a patient's body to generate electricity.

The device would make surgery to replace pacemakers' batteries unnecessary, New Scientist magazine reports.

The battery would be planted just below the skin.
