ARTHUR Andersen, the defunct accountancy group, was last Monday fined £1.1m for failures in auditing Wickes, the DIY group that crashed in 1996 when a £17m fraud was discovered. In addition, two Andersen partners were each fined £25,000. Though Wickes managed to survive and was eventually sold to Focus, shareholders were badly burned. Yet will they see any of this money to compensate for their losses? Not on your life.
