7/7 memorial in Hyde Park gets go-ahead

A MEMORIAL in Hyde Park to the victims of the 7/7 attacks has been approved by Westminster council.

It will be on the east side of the park between Lovers Walk and Park Lane.

Designed by architects Carmody Groarke, with artistic advice from sculptor Antony Gormley, it comprises 52 pillars, each representing a victim.

The pillars will be grouped in four clusters reflecting the four bombings at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross and Tavistock Square on 7 July 2005.

Each column will have its own inscription. Columns will be cast in stainless steel, in a process that will ensure no two are exactly the same.

Michael Brahams, chairman of the council subcommittee that approved the design, said: "This is a fitting tribute in keeping with its setting, a bold and emotive sculpture which will ensure 7 July is never forgotten, and the cruel and needless loss of life is etched in the consciousness of future generations."
