The bombings came as Britain's Foreign Secretary Jack Straw embarked on the latest stage of his mission to avert all-out war between India and Pakistan. The two nuclear powers exchanged fire across their ceasefire line in Kashmir as Mr Straw left Islamabad and flew to Delhi for talks with Indian prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Earlier, India had described a speech by Pakistan's-military ruler, General Pervez Musharraf, as "disappointing and dangerous" and said it had heightened rather than eased tensions.
