12-year-old is a comedy hit

She's feisty, funny and at 12 years old is being described as the latest stand-up comedy sensation.

Crystal McLaren has been a finalist in a nationwide competition for young comedians, played gigs in clubs from London to Brighton, and could make her TV debut next month.

Crystal, from Uckfield, East Sussex, already has an agent and writes her own material. "I've just always loved comedy," said Crystal. "Lee Evans, Billy Connolly, Victoria Wood, League of Gentlemen. I've watched their videos since I was small. I just think making people laugh is a great thing to do."

Comedian Tony Morwood, who first met her at a comedy workshop in Brighton, said: "She's a one-off, absolutely. She seems to have no fear.

"I think she has enormous potential because adults enjoy watching her. It gives a different perspective on an adult world."

Her parents, Denise, a home help, and Ian, a fire alarm system engineer, are both delighted at their daughter's early ambitions. "I think it's terrific," said Mrs McLaren. "But we wouldn't push her. It all comes from her."

Mr McLaren's video collection has been an undoubted inspiration for his daughter. He said: "We obviously look at any tapes before we let her see them, to check what is suitable." When she is performing they also ensure she has the early spot. Mr McLaren said: "She doesn't stay for all the other acts."

She is due to appear at the London Comedy Festival next month and could feature on Blue Peter but has her sights set even higher.

She said: "I would really like to do a sitcom."
