This weekend sees the end of the 192 directory enquiries service, and the introduction of a glut of replacement firms. We've all seen the ads, but can any of us remember one of the new numbers? And if you can, is that the best one to call?Well, we've muddled through the advertising maze and have come up with a simplified guide to the new system. So first off, here are the numbers:118 800 - Directory Enquiries UK118 500 - BT118 118 - The Number118 247 - Yellow Pages11 88 88 - Double One, Double Eight, Double Eight11 88 66 - Double One, Double One, Double Six118 119 - 192.Com's Directory Service118 180 - Telewest Broadband National118 499 - Share UK Directory Enquiries118 111 - One.Tel Directory enquiries11 88 11 - One118 000 - Orange118 877 - Telco Directory Enquiries118 099 - Cable & Wireless Quickcall118 499 - Share Charity Directory Enquiries Service118404 - Ymholiadau Rhifau Ffon BT y Du (try this line only if you speak Welsh!)So which one should you call? If you're calling from a BT landline, Directory Enquiries UK (118 800) will work out the cheapest at 19p per minute. BT's own service will charge you 55p. Make sense? Well ... not really. The most expensive service is 118 118 - which has arguably the most memorable advertising campaign - at 58p per minute from a standard BT line. The rest of the numbers will cost you between 20 and 40 pence per minute. Now if you're calling from a mobile, everything changes. Just expect to pay, and to pay a lot.And if it's an international number you're after, the process starts again. The old 153 number has also been replaced with a load of new ones. Here they are:118190 - Telewest Broadband118449 - Cable & Wireless118505 - BT118899 - Double One, Double Eight, Double Nine118880 - Orange International118866 - Double one, Double Eight, Double Six. At last! A number that covers both national and international enquiries. One last thing - if you can't remember ANY of these - you can still call 192. But you'll get a message telling you to call another number. That number will choose and tell you one of the new numbers at random.Good luck!MORE ABOUTAdvertisingBTMarket ResearchTelecommunications
