Barnes, just across the river from noisy Hammersmith, is a family favourite village with good schools, an active community, handsome houses — many listed and in conservation areas, interesting shops, pubs and even a green and a duck pond. It is six miles from Trafalgar Square and sits on a bend in the Thames, with a 120-acre nature reserve belonging to the London Wetland Centre.
