Life in Highgate: An area guide to N6

Highgate is located in London’s Zone 3, but it feels worlds away from the capital’s buzz.

Although the lively community offers an array of cultural events, the leafy streets and Georgian homes give the area an 18^th-century village feel.

Surrounded by Highgate Wood and Hampstead Heath, Highgate’s ample green space is perpetually filled with both young families and dog walkers. And while the village centre is dominated by restaurant chains, a handful of independent retailers can be found on main roads.

Most renters are young professional couples looking to rent one or two bedroom flats, says Khan Cohen, the rental manager at the local branch of Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward.

Shepard’s Hill is among the most popular areas, with prices ranging from £1,400 to £1,700 a month.

And most buyers are people who started looking for property in Hampstead or Belsize Park, but turned to Highgate in search of more space for their money.

The area has a mix of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian housing, with one bedroom flats averaging at £442,000, two bedroom flats at £624,000 and two bedroom houses at £729,000.
