A vote of no confidence is seen as the first step in moving to a more formal deselection process.
Mr Sharma said: “The action was motivated by religious and racial grounds. Those trying to split our local party do not represent our movement’s history of anti-racist campaigning.”
Ms Davies strongly denied the claims, saying: “It’s unbelievable that he says it was racially motivated. All backgrounds spoke for the motion.”
She said people “spoke from the left and the right and all major faiths and of no faith”.
A spokesperson for the constituency said the vote was a shared view from across religious and racial groups.
