More gelato, vicar? Selfridges lays on ice cream afternoon tea

A gelato pop-up given a full-time spot at Selfridges due to high demand has secured its place in the store’s history by serving an ice cream afternoon tea.

Snowflake, which was founded in 2012, set up shop in the Oxford Street store last summer and proved a hit with customers. Its afternoon tea, served from today, includes ice cream sponge and cookie sandwiches and gelato-stuffed macaroons and gelato-stuffed cannoli. It costs £15 per person.

Chef Silvia Gaetta, right, who is originally from Bologna in northern Italy, said: “We have gelato which is so Italian and we have tea which is very British. The challenge for me was to combine the two and renovate some Italian classics too like cannoli — which are usually filled with a cheese or a custard but here are with gelato. It is all made by hand, which is very important to me.”
